February 2024: A President’s Day Weekend Getaway

Huntington Beach State Park, SC; February 16-19, 2024

Site #127

Our camping itch was strong to get out by the time this trip came around.  It’s been since New Year’s since we camped and even longer for Rachel, so we *really* needed this trip.

Got the hammocks set up in a grove around the campfire again - best practice if you can do it!

This is my happy place!

Huntington Beach never disappoints and I would have to say that this is probably my favorite site to date.  While there are others we *could* (and will) do again, this was my favorite.

The girls had an early release day and we took advantage of leaving as soon as they got off the bus.  It’s only an hour and a half to HBSP, so we got there with lots of time to get set up, hit the gift shop, and brave making smash burgers merely sites down from where a raccoon stole our entire dinner pre-cooking when last we were here!  (We were successful this time, but those raccoons were on the Blackstone EVERY night after we went to bed!)

We made it down to the beach and despite the fact that it was only 52 degrees and the water  was 48-50, Grace STILL went in swimming and boogie boarding! The tide was pretty far out, so we did some shell and shark’s tooth hunting (got lots of shells, no shark’s teeth :( ).  Auntie and Kaety made a sandcastle village and decorated it with beach finds - pretty awesome!

Back at camp, we went for a long bike ride on one of the main trails, stopping at multiple trees to take in their beauty, learn how they grow and, of course, climb them!

We ended up at the Nature Center, which we did not go in the last time we were here.  We had walked out on the boardwalk, which was winding through the marsh, but found that this time, due to some really severe storms we had in January that were NOT hurricanes, but came with hurricane force winds, almost the entire boardwalk was gone!  There were lots of nesting birds hanging out on the pieces that were strewn about the marsh, and we found out after talking to the curator in the Nature Center that the plan is to rebuild the walk,, but with Trex vs. wood and it will take at least 3 years to complete!  There was a TON of fun stuff in the Nature Center and great bird watching.  So much cool stuff that we came back the next day with Kaety and Daddy who had not gone on our bike/Nature Center trek.

Learning about our local marsh life!

An awesome guide!!!

Fish guide

Turtle guide

Sea Star guide!

A new ice cream place (Spoonbill’s) opened up across from the visitor center a couple weeks before we were here so we decided to go check it out.  It was definitely kid- and Steve-approved!!  Auntie and I went back to the camper and ate smoked queso… LOL :)

Back at the camper, we all showered the grunge off and then showed off our big shower hair…

And fooled around making faces and taking selfies…

While Daddy and Kaety took a nap!
Loooove

It was a great, albeit short weekend at one of our favorite near-home getaways…a great time spent in the trees…
