Armadillos and Bunnies: A Quick Little Getaway to Blythe Island Regional Park
May 3 - 6, 2024: Blythe Island Regional Park, GA
Site #57; Other sites to ponder - almost all the 90’s!
This was a GREAT little regional park - our first time trying this vs a state park. We really enjoyed it. We arrived after an early release day for the girls - actually, I screwed up - it was NOT early release! So I took them out early. *TERRIBLE MOM AWARD GOES HERE!*
On the way there, we got the MOST AWESOME call - Grace got into Charleston School of the Arts! To say she was overwhelmingly happy is definitely an understatement!
Within about 45 minutes of leaving the house, the park called and told us the front desk closed at 5, but if we weren’t going to be there before then (we weren’t!), they would leave instructions for us. They were SUPER courteous! We arrived and bunnies were hopping around everywhere when we pulled in through the check in station - how neat!
This trip was ALL about the armadillos at the campsite and all around AND the rabbits at the campground. They were EVERYWHERE! Every night we had an armadillo (or two!) visit us while we sat around the campfire at the campsite! It was so cool - he literally got within 2 feet of us!!! We ended up throwing leftover veggies and fruit out for him.
The campground is known for its rabbits. Some of them wanted around and beg for food and are super tame. Others are kept in a bunny barn at the front area and will be released at the end of the summer. We were able to feed them every night, see babies, and even hold a couple!
We also fed turtles off of the foot bridge and got to feed and play with a really unusual duck who had a red face and black and white feathers. He was beautiful. Gracie named him “CHAD” Crazy-Assed Duck (with an H!). :)
Grace and I went on a walk one morning and saw pileated woodpeckers and great blue herons and lots of frogs and lily pads. It was gorgeous. Auntie ended up dubbing the woodpeckers “variegated woodpeckers” over the course of the weekend 😂
We went on a hike on some of the bike and walking trails, which was awesome. It went out to the marsh and through the woods. While walking, we came across a curious armadillo AND found a geocache. It was a lot of fun.
The second day, we went to the swim beach after our hike. Unfortunately, we encountered a bunch of people who were not even aware of their surroundings and almost ran over the girls in the water! We were reminded why people can be jerks :(
Sunday, we did a family hike for 2.65 miles along the hiking tails (and saw some creepy bones on the trek!) and then drove over to Jekyll Island to take a horseback ride. We drove through Jekyll Island State Park campground and definitively determined it is NOT a place we would want to stay. We would, however, like to come back to Blythe Island and then take bikes over and ride the 24 miles of trails on Jekyll.
The horseback ride did not disappoint. We saw a Bald Eagle and its HUGE nest. Lots of birds, lots of jellyfish (on the beach) and some really cool “tree bones” on the beach. We rode Bleu (Grace), Tito Bandito (Kaety), April (Auntie), Whiskey (Mom), and Bess (Daddy). They were great trail horses and the girls did great!
There were other adventures, such as Mommy’s lemon throwing championship (she lost AND won!) and lots of skink sightings (brown with red heads!). AND a LOT of mosquitoes…no wonder the dragonflies were so prolific!!! They were well fed…and we helped contribute as well!
It was a REALLY great trip. We were able to extend so we didn’t have to check out at 11 (cost us $5.25) and didn’t leave til almost 3. Super grateful for these times together and for being able to celebrate Grace’s SOA Admission!
