Hunting Island State Park, Site #169
October 25-28, 2024
It felt like EONS since we had camped when we took off for this sorely needed trip. We had a trip planned at the beginning of the month to go to Table Rock State Park and meet Steve’s brother and sister-in-law there, but ended up having to cancel it due to Hurricane Helene who swept through the mountains of GA, SC, NC, and TN with a ferociousness no one expected. So many homes and businesses damaged, so many parks closed. It was intense. So getting to head out to Hunting Island and go on what seems to be becoming our annual Halloween trip was something we were really looking forward to.
We pulled into Site #169, which is a pull-through, and were set up in less than an hour! Grace took off on her rollerblades almost immediately while Kaety helped me get dinner going. Grace must have skated over 10 miles on those rollerblades this trip!
Since it was such a quick trip, we wanted to spend most of our time at the beach. And the weather did NOT disappoint. It was gloriously warm (in the 80’s!) and beautiful - even warm enough that the three girls all went in the water! At the end of October!!!!
Kaety mostly loves to build sand castles and play in the sand. This trip was no different. That girl sure does love her sand buckets!
Beach. End of October. ‘Nuff said…
Grace was awesome and stayed with Kaety to let Steve and me go for a long walk down the beach, collecting seashells and some sand dollars and just tooling along the beautiful beach.
When we got back, Grace and Kaety had made quite the sand castle village!
Look how proud she is! LOL.
Grace finally convinced me the water was not as cold as I was expecting and I ended up going in and swimming with her for 45 minutes or so. It was actually LOVELY.
We were even graced by an eagle soaring over us on this perfect, blue-skied SC day!
The waves were perfect for boogie boarding on this first day and Grace caught some good ones!
Late afternoon, we walked back to the campsite and set up a campfire and I painted some. Steve captured this fabulous picture of one of the trees at our site. It was GORGEOUS out!
Sunday before we had to head out, it was back to the beach. This time the girls decided to bury themselves in the sand. They took turns, but Kaety liked it most when Grace was standing in a hole and she got to be taller than Grace for a change!
All good things have to come to an end, and we had to head back to the camper and finish taking things down to head home in the afternoon around 3:30. I don’t think any of us wanted to go.
But…before we left, Grace captured this FABULOUS picture of the 4 of us by digging a heart into the sand and putting her phone in and taking a picture. I thought she was crazy at first, but darn if it didn’t turn out awesome!!!
