Fort McAllister SP, GA - Site #2
November 22-27, 2024
We took a pre-Thanksgiving trip to Fort McAllister, which remains one of our favorite historical sites/state parks. Our site was the first one on the marsh as you pull into the campground area, Site #2 - it had spectacular views of the marsh and a large camp side that allowed us to have the dogs out with us and gave us great walking space!
View of the marsh
Lila and Sammy - camping pups!
Auntie and her Boobler Boo…
Spacious camp side!
Morning time in the hammock is my favorite… actually, who am I kidding - ANY time in the hammock is my favorite!!
We made a trip into town to pick up some things we forgot and found this BBQ sauce. (My Uncle Hoot would have LOVED it!). We had to buy it as his namesake!
Back at the campsite, we did a little exploring and found the skeletal remains of a raccoon as on the edge of the marsh!
Sunset views over the marsh…
Kaety decided to play a game with Lila - I don’t think she was amused…
After a couple of days, Grace asked if we could geocache. There are a lot of caches in the park! We used our Geocache app and found some great finds! Unfortunately, we forgot to bring rocks to add to the caches. Next time…. !
Geocaching is hard work… :)
This was a really cool cache, right on the main road between the historical sites and the campground. It’s under Batman’s car!!
The views at this campground really are spectacular…
We decided to hit the historical sites and tour Ft. McAllister. Though we have done it before, it was just as great the second time around. It is fascinating to see remnants of and learn more about the Civil War…. Grace was our tourguide, reading about each location as we toured them…
The old hospital - UNDERGROUND!
Clearly some damage was done with the hurricanes that came thru this past summer (Helene), as part of the trail/tour was closed due to downed trees and an unsafe bridge.
After our tour, we went to the “exercise area” as Kaety calls it - sort of a park. This time they have this downed Live Oak near the park behind a fence, but it is still just as beautiful.
We rode our bikes back to the campground (Grace, Auntie and I) and I decided to continue on beyond our campsite and go down the walking trail in the campground area with my bike. Unfortunately, parts of that trail were also damaged by the hurricane and were difficult to pass through. I *may* have gotten lost and turned down the wrong way…by the time I walked my bike out of the forest, I was a hot, sweaty mess with Spanish moss and branches in my hair…I felt like I was coming out of the Jungles of Nam…. And yes, Steve and Auntie gave me a very hard time!
Diagram of my harrowing cycling experience!
The raccoons at this campground are not at all afraid of the campers. The last night, we caught this bugger trying to come into our camp area and scavenge for food!
Camping is hard work for a big dog… ;)
