A Hometown Getaway: Mount Pleasant KOA - March 2025

March 10-15, 2025

We lost our beloved dog, Lila in January soon after we returned from camping and about a month later, in February, we welcomed our new Great Dane puppy, Willow.  We decided we should take some time and do a short trip to see how she behaved in the camper, so we did a “staycation” and booked a site during the week at the KOA that is about 3 miles from our house.  This was actually perfect because we could still get Kaety and Grace to their respective buses and get them to school, run home and take care of our kitty, Mirabella (also a post-Delilah pet), and still feel like we were getting away.  I had just started my terminal “sabbatical” from my 20+ year career with Sila and I could still conduct job search from the campground, so it worked great!  Auntie did not get to come with us because she was on a European vacation with her parents and sister for Sarah’s 40th birthday!

Willow made herself at home in the camper and did great with the pen we bought to let her hang out outside.  Unfortunately, she’s going to outgrow that pen SOON!



Steve and I took a couple of walks on the trail around the back of the KOA while the girls were in school - It was beautiful and the dogs and we loved it.

The last night, Grace’s BFF, Lainey, came and camped with us.  The girls rented some of the KOA’s go cart/pedal bikes and tooled around the campground in the evening.  

We retuned home on Saturday morning and Grace, not having slept much the night before, snuggled up with Mirabella on the couch and napped!  Staycations can be exhausting :)

 Hester’s Bottoms, Mt. Carmel, SC, Site #6 June 21-29, 2025 We decided to spend Steve and my birthdays camping at a lake this year, and decided we really wanted to go back to Hester’s Bottoms on Clark’s Hill Lake. It’s been 4 years since we first camped here, but we knew we would be on the lake and would get good time together, so we set off to Mt. Carmel, SC amidst record heat in SC for June.  Every day was over 95, with heat indexes well into the 100’s - it was HOT.  We were very glad we were able to cool off in the lake! The night before we headed out, Steve surprised me with a dinner out and a show - a John Denver tribute band!  We had seen them before in Seattle, years ago.  But they were sooooo good and it was so much fun.  Auntie took the girls and we all had fun nights!   The next morning, we headed out to Hester’s Bottoms! Beach Days and Sunrays at Hunting Island, SC: October 2024

 Hunting Island State Park, Site #169 October 25-28, 2024 It felt like EONS since we had camped when we took off for this sorely needed trip.  We had a trip planned at the beginning of the month to go to Table Rock State Park and meet Steve’s brother and sister-in-law there, but ended up having to cancel it due to Hurricane Helene who swept through the mountains of GA, SC, NC, and TN with a ferociousness no one expected.  So many homes and businesses damaged, so many parks closed.  It was intense.  So getting to head out to Hunting Island and go on what seems to be becoming our annual Halloween trip was something we were really looking forward to. We pulled into Site #169, which is a pull-through, and were set up in less than an hour!  Grace took off on her rollerblades almost immediately while Kaety helped me get dinner going.  Grace must have skated over 10 miles on those rollerblades this trip!
